The Best?! of 2020

I think it’s safe to say that 2020 has been the shortest-longest-weirdest year, at least in the years that I’ve been around. I can’t believe it’s New Year’s Eve quite honestly. Someone once told me after we had Maeda “the days are long and the years are short” and that statement has never felt truer. While I’m very thankful that we were relatively unscathed by all that was happening around us, it seems like just a few days ago I was flying to Bali to co-host a yoga retreat and now, here we are, 12/31/2020.

Balinese Sunrise over Mt Batur - we woke at 2am, drove an hour, had breakfast and by 4am we were hiking up the side of the volcano to make it to the top for sunrise at 6am!

I haven’t really shared many photos of this year’s Bali adventure (or this year’s adventures period), it really is one of my favorite places in the world to visit and has some of the kindest people! Each time we go back is like coming home to a home-away-from-home. I can’t wait to take Maeda & Drew in a few years and let her experience the magic of Bali - the people, the food, the sites, everything!

Anyway, as I was watching a few IG stories earlier I came across a story asking 4 questions:

What new thing did you try in 2020?
What was the hardest part of 2020?
What was your greatest achievement of 2020?
What was your biggest lesson of 2020?

I thought it’d be fun to answer these questions here on the blog to be able to look back at in years to come - especially since this little blog space is new!

What new thing did I try in 2020? Teaching yoga online is what comes to mind first, then acupuncture and nutrition response testing.
Teaching yoga online is exhausting, almost more so than teaching in person. Not having instant feedback is tough…also not having anyone to laugh at my jokes is tough (LOL!). But I will say having to jump into online teaching added another important tool to my tool belt. So while I’ve also backed off from teaching (I only teach 2-3 classes per week now), I’ve become more confident and clear in my teaching and allowed myself to SLOW DOWN. Before March 2020 I was teaching anywhere from 8-15 classes per week plus running the yoga studio and taking photography clients. I’m not going to lie, on the way to Bali in March I slept most of the 2-8 hour flights we had.
Acupuncture and nutrition response testing have been life savers throughout this year. Acupuncture because it’s an hour once a month that allows me to reset, reset and relax. And nutritional response testing has allowed me to rebalance my nutrition and feel better overall.

What was the hardest part of 2020? Choosing to close my yoga space - but I will also say this was the biggest stress reliever as well. Sad to put an end to an era but also thankful that closing it made space to open up this new adventure.

What was your greatest achievement of 2020? Making time for me, slowing down and making choices that best suit me - aka putting a halt to the people pleasing. Being able to have a ton of family time. Doing these things has left me such a renewed sense of self worth and allowed me to give in a way that I couldn’t have in years prior. Also teaching Maeda to the words to a bunch of songs so we can have car concerts. If you know, you know ;)

What was your biggest lesson of 2020? Knowing that people are either a lesson or a blessing - the blessings will be there thru thick and thin and the lessons will keep reappearing until you learn from them. I also learned that I have the capacity to make changes in business, make them quick and have confidence that I made the right decision.

Just like Julie Andrews sings in the Sound of Music -

“I must dream of the things I am seeking
I am seeking the courage I lack
The courage to serve them with reliance
Face my mistakes without defiance
Show them I'm worthy
And while I show them
I'll show me!”

…yes, I just went there ;) But, discovering my courage and showing up for myself has been my own biggest asset.

Overall, 2020 was a great year (despite all of the drama all over the world). Being able to focus on some pet projects of mine and bring to light a new business venture has been so great. I’m really excited step into 2021 with new goals in sight and new ways to continue helping others.

I hope you had a wonderful year!
